Ditch the denim walking trousers and go for the 'Techno' Trousers

The new 'Techno Trousers' really are the most suitable walking trousers for outdoor enthusiasts.

So many people these days go out walking in Denim Jeans or chinos and cords one would think that they are the proper wear for every devotee of walking. Sadly although they might look de rigeur in the High Street or down the pub, out in the elements they are not up to the mark.

Most of these are made of or contain a high proportion of cotton and the problem with cotton is that is has a high wicking capability so in the cold it will pull the heat from the body and in strong winds do this very rapidly.

When jeans get wet they become heavy, uncomfortable and take a long time to dry off assuming that the rain has stopped. Even in warm weather moisture retention is a problem because they will hold onto sweat whilst you are active and when you cease for a rest or whatever the moisture will chill rapidly and thus the sweaty part of you body i.e. around the waist or the crutch will rapidly cool and that will lead to muscle contraction and aches.

If the jeans are figure hugging around the bum and thighs that in itself will present problems due to the restriction of movement. They also lack the useful pockets, elasticated panels, DWR water resistant treatment, stretch and versatility that purpose designed walking trousers posses.

Ladie's Berghause Statis pants suitable for walking in all weathers Consider also that your legs are the pins that carry you and your load through rough and smooth of your travels and so they deserve some respect.

So what are the main point to look for when deciding upon a new pair of walking trousers.

Strides / bloomers, breeches, britches, chaps, chinos, cords, corduroys, denims, dungarees, jeans, knickers, overalls, pantaloons, rompers, and slacks isn't it amazing the names that we give to just one item or even pantalones in Spanish. It never ceases to amaze me.

Firstly i guess the waist is the most important because if you can't hold then up you are in trouble. Part elasticated waist bands seem to be the most suitable answer for most of us combined with a fabric belt for added assurance and some adjustment.

Pockets that will carry the important items. Cards, cash nose wipes, knife, compass etc. For the larger items like a map a cargo pocket on the leg is desirable or even essential for most people but there are some who prefer not to have these so it is a personal choice. Preferably Zips or velcro fastening for security and ease of access. One point in favour of cargo leg pockets is the difficulty over hip pockets to 'pick' them.

Many will have reinforced seat and knee panels as added features worth considering if you are going to be crawling about on your knees in addition to the protection that the extra knee cover gives in cold/windy weather. It is essential to look after your knees at all times being as they are such an integral part of walking because arthritis or other complications really do cramp your style.

Having mentioned that cotton is not a suitable fabric to cover your legs in then what is suitable? Well the most popular of the new weather beating fabrics today is known as soft shell and they work brilliantly as walking trousers and they can be treated with insect and water repellents and even give improved sun protection for hotter extreme conditions.
