White wine. Is it as good for your Heart as Red wine?
White wine. We’ve all been told that a little red wine is good for us, and especially for our heart. But can the same be said for the blond version? Red wine – unlike its white counterpart – contains resveratrol, which scientists believe was the magic ingredient that helps keep our heart healthy. Resveratrol is found in grape skin, which is discarded in the making of white wine.
Resveratrol is produced by several plants, apparently for its antifungal properties. Apart from being found on the skins of grapes it is also extracted by the Japanese from Japanese knotweed plant. The action of the resveratrol is valued essentially in the form of an anti-cancer supplement. Additionally, the compound is also known to be effective in slowing down the development of atherosclerotic plaques in the valves of the heart and thus has a protective effect on the heart. The inflammation which causes eczema is also lessened by this compound. But a new study has found that white wine is just as good for the heart, and that one or two glasses a day will provide a protective effect. Researchers from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine found that white variety of wine offered the same protective benefits when it was fed to a group of rats. Those given the white vino suffered less heart damage than those fed only water or grain alcohol. So there’s something about all wine that is good for our heart – whether you drink red or white. (Source: Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, 2008; 56: 9362-73). One other way to get almost as much benefit from drinking wine without the alcohol is to eat the dried fruit of the vines - currants, sultanas and raisins, something i have every morning as part of my breakfast. As part of your diet you have the benefit of fruit with natural sugars and all of the other ingredients associated with vine fruits. (A raisin is any dried grape, A currant is a dried Zante grape, and a sultana was originally a raisin made from a specific type of grape of Turkish origin.) So make it a part of your daily allowance of 5 fresh fruit and vegetables a day. New research has found that resveratrol injected into the back of patients suffering injuries have found this to Stop further damage to the cartilage in the discs. according to the latest research published in the journal 'Spine'. This was the evidence published from research carried out at Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago. So as it is already known that resveratrol gives benefits as a powerful antioxidant and previous studies have shown to block heart disease and reduce the risk of Prostate cancer it now becomes a powerful ally in healing. Even more reason to believe that a daily glass of Red or White wine or a handful of currants will do you the world of good.
