Are Tomatoes really good for us?
Well if you believe the manufacturers of products using them - and lycopene supplements, then yes they are...butDoctors asked a load of men who had Tomatoes, (incidentally they are a fruit not a vegetable,) as a base for their pizzas how many they remember having eaten (not what i would exactly call a healthy diet) and concluded the survey with saying that eating lots of pizzas with tomato sauce was beneficial for good prostate health.
Wow some survey. However in 1990 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute studied the drawn blood of 25,802 men and analyzed the micro nutrients like lycopene. They found that retinol (thats vitamin A or beta carotene) levels were very important for good prostate health whereas lycopene had no relevance in prostate health whatsoever. In Honolulu 6860 men had their blood similarly analyzes and the scientists came to the same conclusion that eating this enticing looking fruit and consuming lycopene had no beneficial effect whatsoever on good prostate health. Let's look at this from another aspect. For many years this plant was considered for centuries to be an inedible ornamental plant
Tomatoes
potatoes and peppers along with eggplants are members of the same family and that is the Nightshade or Deadly Nightshade family. Skeptical are you? Well most experts will agree that people who remove these Nightshade foods from their diets find that their arthritis and other illnesses will improve. Still having some doubts? As members of the Nightshade family they contain substances called Tomatine and Solanine. If you were to collect these substances from one tomato a day for a year and take them as one dose there is enough poison to kill your entire family outright. A study by Harvard Medical School in 1996 found 50% MORE lycopene in actual human prostate cancer tissue than in healthy prostate. Shall i say that again: 50% more lycopene was found in prostate cancer tissue than in healthy tissue. In Africa and in Asia where these fruits are generally not in the diets of these inhabitants they have the lowest incidence of prostate cancer in the world. As for me i think i will pass on the ketchup on most occasions thank you and limit my intake of potatoes and peppers as well and as i want to remain healthy i will continue
