Food - like products or Proper Food, which to Choose?

Fortified breads, Cereals and ready meals aren't actually food. They are..

"food-like substances" that are Invented in laboratories, refined, fortified, reduced in fat, increased but often decreased in omega 3s, increased omega 6, increased salt and sugars, altered and generally meddled with, in other words Processed

Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as something fit for the table is a very good maxim that we should all learn to live by.

Fresh food on display outside a shop in eastern Europe It is far better to eat fresh whole locally sourced in season produce - fish, meat, vegetables and fruits if you want to lose weight and lower your cholesterol levels. A diet like this will also increase you energy levels properly and not give you a rush of high and then low associated with processed chemicals.

  • Avoid any products containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar b) unpronounceable c) more than five in number or that include d) high fructose corn syrup
  • Avoid all products that make health claims
  • Shop at the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle - processed items dominate the centre aisles of the store, while fresh food lines the walls.
  • Get out of the supermarket whenever possible - shop at the farmer's market or local markets instead
  • Eat mostly plants, especially leaves - This means don't eat too many seed’s and seed based products and oils. Why? Because leaves contain omega 3 fatty acids and have been exposed to the energy of the sun all of which are good factors, but seeds don't as they contain too much omega 6 fatty acid, which isn't good for you.
  • You are what you eat, eats too - the diet of the animals we eat has a bearing on the nutritional quality of the produce itself. A diet of grass means much healthier fats than a diet of seeds and grain.
  • Eat well-grown produce from healthy soils, this means organic, or well-famed non-organic soil.

    One advantage of eating organically produced vegetables straight from the soil is the healthy bacteria that grows in the soil. These bacteria help your gut to remain healthy and may prevent many forms of allergies but crops sown in the sterile soil of modern farming practices contain few, if any good bacteria but along with weed killers, herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers they present a formidable cocktail of poisons which attack the body and manifest in all manner of ills .

  • Eat wild food when you can
  • Take supplements
  • Eat more like the French, or the Italians, or the Japanese, or the Indians, or the Greeks.

    People who eat according to the rules of their traditional cultures where crops are cultivated and gathered, are healthier than people eating a contemporary western diet. (witness the people who come to the "civilized" world from poorer areas, how quickly they succumb to our western diseases) Have a glass of wine with dinner. The benefits to your heart increase with the amount of alcohol consumed up to about four drinks a day (depending on your size) and white is equally as beneficial as red.

Moderate you intake of potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. They are members of the Nightshade family. Highly poisonous and especially if you suffer with arthritis as tomatoes are proven to aggravate the symptoms.

Keep walking as you will feel the benefits even more when you eat the right foods. Your body will love you for it.

Strange as it may seem once you start your walking adventures and alter your diet for a more healthy option a number of things will happen.

Naturally your fitness will improve just by walking regularly after a period of inactivity but with the right mind set you will no longer want 'convenience things from a packet' that are laden heavily with sugar, salt, fats and chemicals but the appeal for real fresh natural food will becomestronger.

Personally when i need to take a small snack to keep me going for a longer period i carry a small bag of Dates and Walnuts. These both satisfy my hunger pangs immediately with sugar from dates but not only that i get the benefit of a dried fruit and all of the mineral benefits from eating nuts.

Walnuts are particularly very good for the brain.

So a wholesome simple snack that is full of goodness and not a chemical in sight and a bottle of either spring or filtered water to wash it down.
